Flames were seen billowing from the roof of a building on the 1400 block of Johnston Drive shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, the Bethlehem Fire Department said.
Staffing and COVID-related issues were cited as a reason for lack of engine availability that may have hindered response times and station coverage.
“This is what happens when administration keeps rolling the dice with safety!” the department said.
“Three firefighters on the initial attack is just not enough. Taking four firefighters from the rank and file will not help this situation.”
One firefighter was taken to a local hospital for treatment of exhaustion and has since been released, LehighValleyLive reports citing Fire Chief Warren Achey.
Meanwhile, at least 30 residents were displaced, though no other injuries were reported, the outlet states.
The fire remains under investigation.
